Armgarden Workshop

December 4th, 2007

In this lowdown liquid improvisation we will dive into deep attention to impulse and sensory response.  We will perform the role of the oceanic audience and performative landscape in Julia Rae Antonick’s new work. From one moment to the next we will shift from riding the wave of someone’s impulse across the space, to barely floating a limb in sympathy with the limbs around us, and sometimes simply being reclining audience members.

Armgarden is open to movers of various backgrounds, preferable with some improv experience.

November 1st, 2007

DanceBridge: Call for Proposals

The Department of Cultural Affairs is currently seeking proposals from professional Chicago-based dance artists and choreographers for the Winter session (January 14- April 5, 2008) of DanceBridge.

DanceBridge offers free rehearsal space for 12 week periods in the Dance Studio of the

Chicago Cultural Center as well as a performance opportunity to present the developing work.  Its goal is to foster the creation of new and innovative work, particularly work that “crosses boundaries” of style or tradition, reflects contemporary international influences or involves interdisciplinary exploration.

Interested choreographers and companies must submit a proposal by the November 15, 2007 deadline. Proposal forms and further information are available online at: www.cityofchicago.org/CulturalAffairs

Call for Proposals - CROSSCUT: Collaboration of Sound/Movement

November 1st, 2007

CALL FOR PROPOSALSCROSSCUT: New collaborations in Sound/MovementA Links Hall/ESS Partnership

Links Hall and Experimental Sound Studio (ESS) join their energies in an effort to precipitate new collaborations between Chicago-based sound artists and Chicago-based movement artists. Joint proposals are now invited for the second year of the CROSSCUT program: three pairs of newly collaborating artistic partners will be selected for support with a monetary grant of $5,000 per pair. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee made up of Lou Mallozzi (ESS), CJ Mitchell (Links Hall), Ginger Farley and two out-of-area artists, one from each discipline.

Introductory meetingLinks Hall and ESS will host a “mixer” event at ESS: Sunday November 18, 2007, at 2pm. Movement and sound artists are invited to this gathering, where they can meet each other and learn about the intent of the CROSSCUT program and the specifics of the opportunity.

Library of work samplesArtists will be asked to submit a five minute work sample and a one page artist’s statement (with the artist’s contact information) – these can be brought to the “mixer” event, or submitted to ESS by December 15, 2007. Only DVD and audio CD formats are accepted. The samples will be held in a short-term library housed at ESS until February 15, 2008. During this time interested artists can look and listen to materials and connect with others about potential creative projects. Ideas that spark can be formed into proposals for submission in February. This process offers a number of levels of possibility for cross-exposure between artistic communities, potentially stimulating new ideas and partnerships.

Access to the library is on Saturdays and Sundays 1PM-5PM, or by appointment, November 18, 2007 to February 15, 2008. Please contact Lou Mallozzi at ESS to make an appointment, lmallo@saic.edu (773) 769-1069. Please also contact Lou to confirm opening hours on holiday weekends.

Note: Proposals are welcomed from artists that are do not attend the mixer, or submit materials to work sample library. The event and the library are simply offerings intended to bring artists together that are unknown to each other.

What is a “new collaboration”?We would like to foster new collaborations between sound and movement artists, and recognize that there will be different starting points and processes in each case. We particularly welcome projects where both collaborating artists have been involved in the initial conceptualizing of the project, and are simultaneously embarking on a new process. (In contrast, we are less interested in a sound artist being attached to a movement project which has already been under development for some time without the sound artist’s input, even if there is a new collaborative relationship now taking place.) We welcome proposals which demonstrate a strong connection of sensibilities and interests between the collaborating artists. We recognize that some projects will be at an early stage of development, and if that is the case, we encourage you to reflect that in your proposal; tell us if you’ve only met once. We are more interested in your collaborative process than the formality of a “project” plan.

Call for Proposals:

Eligibility:·        Priority will be given to full-time artists.·        Each proposal should be jointly submitted by one Chicago-based sound artist and one Chicago-based movement artist. If there is an artistic company involved, please provide details, and clarify whether it is an individual within that company (eg the artistic director?) or the full company who is participating in the collaboration.

  • Proposals must represent the first-ever collaboration between the applicants. ie. the sound and movement artists will not have collaborated together before.

Please address the following items in writing in your proposal – please do not exceed three pages in total:

  • Your names, contact mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses. Website addresses are also welcome.
  • Describe your current areas of interest as artists.
  • A project description, including the goals and expectations of your collaboration, and a timeline charting the planned development (and presentation, if known) of the work. Please recognize that CROSSCUT is interested in fostering your collaborative development process – within your proposal, please address how participation in the CROSSCUT program would assist your creative process and development, and how the CROSSCUT award would be applied in your project budget.

In addition, please submit:

  • Documentation of both artists’ work on DVD or audio CD, which should reflect the sound and movement components in each artists’ work. ie. the sound artist’s work sample should reflect their sound work, and the movement artist’s work sample should reflect their movement  work. Five minutes total from each artist (indicate cue points if necessary). Please include written information about the documented projects (eg date, location, collaborators, funders, presenters, and any background information to help us understand the documentation). VHS/video tapes, links to websites, and still images should not be submitted and will not be reviewed.
  • A one page résumé from each artist of your arts-related experience.

RequirementsEach selected pair of artists must co-create a work, which will be publicly presented before December 31, 2009. Funds may be used as best suits the artists: for production costs, to pay for research materials, as leverage to seek funding for a large-scale projects, or to subsidize daily living as artists focus on their work etc.  Selected artists are expected to meet with ESS/Links at least once to discuss the progress of the work and to do at least one in-progress showing, public or private. The program does not provide artists with free use of ESS or Links Hall facilities and equipment, nor does it imply that artists should use those resources in the development and presentation of their new work. ESS and Links will actively work with artists on their strategies for the final presentation of the work. CROSSCUT intends to document the completed works.

CROSSCUT Schedule:

  • APPLICATION DEADLINE: POSTMARK BY 5PM, MONDAY FEBRUARY 25, 2008 OR DELIVER BY 5PM, MONDAY FEBRUARY 25, 2008
  • Notification to selected artists by April 15, 2008
  • Meeting with Links/ESS and in-progress showings – to be scheduled
